PHILIP SORGEN is not really dead-it's just that since he received his poetic license he has been dying to use it. Philip has been an actuarial trainee at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, a Sp4 in The U.S. Army reserve and then for thirtyfour rewarding years, a mathematcs teacher at Great Neck North High School. He plays the piano by ear, composes music (with a pencil) and has tennis elbow, which is a lot less severe than tennis balls. He is the husband of one, a father of two and a grandfather of three. This is the story of his life.

Phil Sorgen has written one of the best coming-of-age books you're likely to read...For anyone who grew up, especially in the New York area in the 50's and '60's Sorgen's reminiscences resonate loudly and clearly. The author relates his life's story with brutal honesty, sharing his hopes, dreams, frustrations and shortcomings in a cynical and often witty narrative. When they make the movie from this book, I nominate a young Richard Dreyfuss to play Sorgen!.Product details

Dead Man Talking and talking and talking Philip Sorgen 9781499048681 Books Reviews
Wow - it's great! Sorgen's writing makes it so easy to relate to the characters. I felt like I knew him, his parents, his grandmother, his siblings, and aunts and uncles. His early years at the bungalow colony made me reminisce about my growing up, and like him, I have wonderful memories of my summers as a kid. Actually, the more I think about it, his feelings of being alone, reticence in approaching girls because of a fear of sure rejection, believing that he was less good looking than the other kids - I had similar experiences.
Sorgen and I are about the same age - I know that he and I would have been close had we known each other. I enjoyed reading Dead Man Talking... and talking... and talking.
Extremely fast read with the author's personality shining through. Extremely funny, witty, and filled with belly laughs as well as tears of sorrow.
I would love to read the sequel, but, alas, the author is purportedly deceased!
Philip Sorgen's life story is compelling, humorous and unique. Mr. Sorgen has an incredible sense of humor and is unbelievably candid about telling us his most intimate details of his life. He paints a sweeping picture of a shy Jewish kid, trying to fit in and be noticed while growing up in in New York and trying to deal with family (and his tragic loss) and falling in love (or just lust). His camp stories reminded me of the movie Dirty Dancing, and his experiences in working for a big insurance company, working with his Dad (a butcher) and as a teacher were amazing. Mostly what comes thru is a story that we all can relate to and enjoy, as we travel thru Mr. Sorgen's life as a fly on his wall. Mr. Sorgen's writing style is crisp, funny and telling and you will not want the book to end. Read it and enjoy the adventure that is Philip Sorgen's life. You will not want to put it down. I can't wait for the sequel.
